Delays last for hours after Mass Pike crash with serious injuries


One person died Thursday after being injured in a three-vehicle collision that caused a traffic jam on the Massachusetts Turnpike for hours. Massachusetts State Police say the accident occurred near Exit 89 on his pike in Massachusetts, Auburn, around 7:25 a.m. A preliminary investigation by police officers revealed that his 2013 Mazda VST, driven by a 23-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, Eastbound when he sideswiped his 2020 Mazda Cx5. His CX5, driven by a 60-year-old man from Sturbridge, was pushed through a guardrail and under a bank. VST then rear-ended his 2017 Jeep Grand his Cherokee driven by his 41-year-old woman from Rhode Island. Three passengers in the car were also taken to hospital for minor injuries. The CX5 driver was taken to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment, and the Jeep driver was unharmed, state police said. As part of the response, a medical helicopter was called into the area. All lanes were closed as an initial response. After about an hour, the left and center lanes were opened to allow some vehicles to pass. Mass Pike was fully reopened around 11am. State police say the crash is under investigation.

According to the Troopers, preliminary investigation revealed that the 2013 Mazda VST driven by a 23-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, was facing east when he traversed the 2020 Mazda Cx5. It turned out. His CX5, driven by a 60-year-old man from Sturbridge, was pushed through a guardrail and under a bank.

The VST then rear-ended a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 41-year-old woman from Rhode Island.

The Ohio man was taken to UMass Memorial Hospital-Lakeside but died from injuries sustained in the crash, state police said. Three passengers in the car were also taken to hospital for minor injuries.

State Police said the CX5 driver was taken to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment and the Jeep driver was unharmed.

As part of the response, a medical helicopter was dispatched to the area.
