Mazda revives rotary engine in MX-30 plug-in hybrid

European deliveries of the MX-30 E-Skyactiv R-EV are scheduled to start in April at a base price of €38,150 in Italy. The car will also be offered in the US and Japan, according to the company.

The plug-in variant joins the fully electric version of the MX-30 in Mazda’s European lineup. Smaller electric crossovers launched in 2020 are selling poorly, dropping 46% to 5,756 he by November, according to Dataforce.

One problem is that the car’s battery is small at just 35 kWh, yet offers a range of up to 200 km (124 miles). By comparison, Hyundai Kona Electric’s small crossover with a 64 kWh battery offers more than double the range of his MX-30 EV.

The third member of Mazda’s MX-30 family is a mild-hybrid variant debuting in 2021 and not available in Europe.

Since the model family debuted at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, talk of rolling out an updated rotary to the MX-30 has swirled.

Mazda considered using the powerplant in the range extender, but opted for the plug-in variant. . But the engine works more often.

lightweight solution

The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV’s electric motor delivers a maximum power output of 125 kilowatts (170 hp) at 9,000 rpm and can produce up to 260 Newton meters (191 lb-ft) of torque.

Mazda said the rotary engine produces a maximum power of 55 kW (74 hp) at 4,700 rpm and is more compact than reciprocating engines of similar power.

The MX-30 plug-in hybrid’s single-rotor is 15 kg (33 lbs) lighter than the double-rotor engine used in the RX-8. The main difference is that aluminum was used for the engine housing instead of steel.

The car support has V2L (vehicle to load) power capability, so you can run appliances and devices up to 1500 W.

The plug-in hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph (0 to 62 mph) in 9.1 seconds. Like its all-electric sibling, the car’s top speed is limited to 140 km/h.

The plug-in hybrid can be charged from 20% to 80% in about 25 minutes with a 36kW or higher DC quick charger. The same charging takes 50 minutes for three-phase 11 kW AC charging and 90 minutes for 7.2 kW AC charging.
