You may have heard of French car brand Alpine. They took over the branding of their parent company, Renault’s Formula 1 team. They also build the Alpine A110 sports car, which rivals the Porsche Cayman. This will probably make an appearance in the new Forbidden Fruit Car Mount Rushmore, which you can’t buy in America.
Alpine has not introduced the A110, but plans to debut it in the US in 2027 or 2028. Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said: car newsAlpine plans to launch two electric crossovers, one midsize and one large. These vehicles are positioned to compete with the Porsche Macan (soon to be EV) and the Cayenne Coupé. Other Alpine projects like the electric A110 and hotter versions of the new Renault 5 EV hatchback won’t be brought in.
Why is Alpine Coming to America?
The business case is clear. Renault plans to expand the Polestar style of its performance brand. Alpine currently sells only his A110, less than 4,000 per year. Alpine wants to sell 150,000 vehicles annually worldwide by 2050. Selling his SUV in America is a great way to achieve that.
What does Alpine’s electric SUV look like?
It’s not very clear. Alpine does not currently manufacture electric vehicles or sport utility vehicles. According to reports, the brand has yet to choose a platform for its new SUV. The platform could come from Renault’s Alliance partner Nissan. Alpine can also look outside the company to brands like Volvo/Polestar.
Should we be excited about Alpine coming to America?
yes. The track record of French automakers in America is certainly not great. No one has attempted a comeback since Renault sold his stake in AMC to Chrysler in the late 1980s (the Sterantis merger derailed plans to buy Peugeot). But France produces quite a few quirky and exciting cars. And with more options on the market, especially the more premium sporty options, it’s a win-win for customers and enthusiasts.
