There are many factors to consider when trying to save money on your next car. Especially the maintenance cost while owning the car is important. According to a new report from CarEdge.com, Toyota is the cheapest car to keep for 5-10+ years. Next is Toyota. And…another Toyota…and another…and another.

That’s right, of the 265 rated models, Toyota locked out the top six and was on average the much cheaper brand to maintain. According to CarEdge, the Toyota’s maintenance costs are expected to be around $1,605 for the first five years, and $5,996 for the first 10 years. If you instead buy Mitsubishi, the highest-ranking brand after Toyota, you can expect to spend 26%, increasing by more than 30% each in his first five years and his ten years.

Not surprisingly, the top five brands are all made in Japan. MINI was the first foreign brand to appear on the list, with Volkswagen, GMC, Kia and Hyundai rounding out the top ten. The bottom six brands were all made in the USA. The Stellantis brand performed the worst, but even his GMC, America’s best brand, costs him 40% more to maintain than a Toyota.

According to CarEdge, the cheapest American car to maintain is the Chevrolet Spark. It ranked 40th among luxury cars, was 47% more expensive than its mainstay Prius, and was discontinued. The worst-performing brand is RAM, with an average maintenance cost of $16,802 for him, about 280% higher than Toyota’s average.

The top six models in five years are Toyota’s Yaris, Corolla, Prius, Camry, Prius Prime and Avalon, with the hybrid model slightly better in ten years. His best-selling RAV4 SUV was only his 21st place, but was his second-most expensive SUV, behind Toyota’s C-HR. In fact, until the rank 60 Kia Soul, there are no utility models other than Toyota. This shows how expensive it is to own a large vehicle.

Moral of the story: If you want to save money on car repairs, buy a Japanese sedan or hatchback, stay away from American brands, and avoid trucks and big SUVs.
