Vehicle thefts up 900% at DTW according to the Detroit Metro Airport Authority


(WXYZ) — Bryan Adams, former owner of the 2021 Jeep Truck Hawk, said, “You can’t really trust your car there.

“I walked into the terminal and even thought, ‘I’ll be back to move to a less prominent location.’ hmm,” said Eric Thomas, former owner of the 2017 Jeep SRT.

Eric and Brian tell a similar story. Both of them had been on business trips for less than 48 hours, but upon returning home, they were shocked to find the parking spaces empty.

“In less than 24 hours, I came back from New York and my car was gone,” says Brian.

“I tried leveling it up and down, but didn’t find it,” adds Eric.

Vehicle thefts will increase nearly 900% from 2021 to 2022, according to Detroit Metro Airport Authority data.

  • 2021: 3 thefts
  • 2022: 29 thefts

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee – 12
  • Dodge Charger – 7
  • Dodge Durango – 6
  • Cadillac Escalade – 1
  • Chevrolet Camaro – 1
  • chrysler 200-1
  • Dodge Ram – 1

There are no cameras anywhere on the Big Blue Deck. In the McNamara Terminal parking lot, 7 Action News found one camera pointed at a maintenance garage.

Brian and Eric say they called the police. The police were able to find Eric’s Jeep and Brian found his own on his Facebook Marketplace. His 2021 Jeep His Trackhawk engine, along with other parts, he says was on the market for $10,000.

“You’ll soon find out, just the engine was set up on a block that was taken out without any care,” he said.

Eric’s 2017 Jeep SRT was found in Detroit police custody with thousands of dollars in damage. Eric said he ran out of gas and smelled of marijuana.

“It was found abandoned on Montclair Avenue in Detroit.”

In a statement, DTW said: McNamara Terminal Parking Deck. We are actively considering the installation of additional cameras and other technology to enhance security, and are pursuing additional investigation and enforcement measures. “
